Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays from Sequestered X Bursts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Assuming that there is no GZK (Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin) cut-off and that super-GZK cosmic rays correlate with AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) at cosmological distances, it is speculated that a relic superheavy particle (X) has its lifetime enhanced by sequestration in an extra dimension. This sequestration is assumed to be partially liberated by proximity of merging supermassive black holes in an AGN, temporarily but drastically reducing the lifetime, thus stimulating an X burst. Based on sequestration of the decay products of X, a speculative explanation of the observed γ/N ratio is proposed.

The arguments suggesting an association between the sources of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are presented. Recent GRB and UHECR observations are shown to strengthen these arguments. Predictions of the GRB model for UHECR production, that may be tested with large area high energy cosmic-ray detectors which are either operating or ...
متن کاملAre Extragalactic Gamma Ray Bursts The Source Of The Highest Energy Cosmic Rays?
Recent observations with the large air shower arrays of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and recent measurements/estimates of the redshifts of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) seem to rule out extragalactic GRBs as the source of the cosmic rays that are observed near Earth, including those with the highest energies. Subject headings: cosmic rays; gamma rays bursts
متن کاملGalactic Constraints on the Sources of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays
We show that if the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with energies E ≥ 10 eV are associated with galaxies, then the production of UHECRs must occur in bursts. Our galaxy is currently at a dim state in between bursts, and the cosmic rays observed at 10eV < E < 10eV are not being produced by the same UHECR sources. The time interval between bursts is ∼ 10 4.5 min{1, (γmin/10 )} y...
متن کاملUltra-High Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutron-Decay Halos from Gamma Ray Bursts
Simple arguments concerning power and acceleration efficiency show that ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRS) with energies > ∼ 10 eV could originate from GRBs. Neutrons formed through photo-pion production processes in GRB blast waves leave the acceleration site and travel through intergalactic space, where they decay and inject a very energetic proton and electron component into intergalacti...
متن کاملUltra-high energy cosmic rays, cascade γ-rays, and high-energy neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are sources of energetic, highly variable fluxes of γ rays, which demonstrates that they are powerful particle accelerators. Besides relativistic electrons, GRBs should also accelerate high-energy hadrons, some of which could escape cooling to produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Acceleration of high-energy hadrons in GRB blast waves will be established if hig...
